The Residence Zanzibar

The Residence Zanzibar is the island's secluded all-villa retreat — 66 stand-alone villas, each with its own private pool, spread across a forested 79-acre beachfront estate at Kizimkazi, the south-west corner of Unguja. Space and privacy are the point: every villa has a pool, a terrace and garden, a separate living room and a big bathroom, with free bikes to roam the estate and a butler on request. Kizimkazi is famous for the dolphins offshore, and the Jozani Forest and its Red Colobus monkeys are nearby, with complimentary kayaks, hobie cats and snorkelling, and a large glass-walled spa using local flora and spice. One honest note on the setting: this south-west beach is shallow and tide-dependent, so the resort is pool-focused, which the 66 private pools and the glass-walled infinity pool more than answer. Dining runs from the old-Persia Dining Room to the colonial Library Bar and private in-villa meals. Around an hour from Stone Town, it suits couples and families after seclusion over all-day sea-swimming.
