The Greatest Safari Stage of All

Tanzania holds the greatest safari stage of all — the endless plains of the Serengeti, the wildlife-packed bowl of the Ngorongoro Crater, the Great Migration that calves and crosses here, and Africa's highest peak in Kilimanjaro. Add the spice-island beaches of Zanzibar offshore, and it offers the complete African journey.

At HighStreet Holidays we don't simply book Tanzania — we route it around the migration's movements: the Serengeti, the Crater and a Zanzibar beach finish, with the bush flights and transfers handled.

With access to a carefully vetted portfolio, from Serengeti tented camps to Zanzibar retreats, we build a Tanzania safari that reaches the wildlife at exactly the right time of year.

The Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater are the gold standard of safari. Pair them with Zanzibar and you have the complete African holiday.

Moments That Linger
Tanzania rewards the traveller who comes for the wildlife. These are the experiences our clients come home remembering.
tanzania safari
The Serengeti
The endless plains of legend — lions, leopards, cheetahs and the largest herds in Africa, with camps that move to follow the migration through the year.
ngorongoro crater
Ngorongoro Crater
A collapsed volcanic caldera teeming with wildlife, including black rhino — one of the densest concentrations of game on earth, in a truly spectacular setting.
The Great Migration
The calving on the southern plains (around January to March) and the dramatic river crossings (mid-year) — the migration spends most of the year in Tanzania.
Tarangire & the North
Tarangire & the North
The great baobab-studded elephant country of Tarangire and the tree-climbing lions of Lake Manyara — the wider northern safari circuit.
Zanzibar
Zanzibar
The spice island offshore — white-sand beaches, turquoise water and the historic alleys of Stone Town, the classic beach finish (see our Zanzibar page).
Kilimanjaro & the South
Kilimanjaro & the South
Africa's highest peak for those who wish to climb, and the remote, wild southern parks of Ruaha and Nyerere for exclusive, crowd-free safari.

Best Time to Visit
When to Go
DRY SEASON & PEAK
June to October
The prime safari season — dry, with concentrated wildlife and the dramatic Serengeti river crossings around mid-year. The busiest and priciest window; book well ahead.
CALVING SEASON
January to March
The migration calves on the southern Serengeti plains — newborns everywhere and intense predator action. Hot, mostly dry and a wonderful, slightly quieter time.
GREEN SEASON
March to May
The long rains bring lush landscapes and the best value, though some camps close. Green, dramatic and quiet, with showers usually in the afternoon.
SHORT RAINS
November to December
Brief showers and green scenery, with good game viewing and fewer crowds — a fine shoulder window before the festive peak.

Practical Information
Practical Information
Getting There
  • No direct flights — around 11-13 hours via a hub (Nairobi, Doha, Amsterdam or Addis Ababa) to Kilimanjaro or Dar es Salaam
  • Connections from major regional UK airports
  • Light aircraft link the parks and Zanzibar
  • Tanzania is 2-3 hours ahead of the UK
Entry Requirements
  • UK passport holders need a Tanzania e-visa (around US$50, single entry), applied for online before travel
  • The e-visa covers mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar
  • Passport valid 6 months
  • A separate Zanzibar travel insurance applies for Zanzibar (see our Zanzibar page)
Health & Safety
  • Antimalarial precautions are recommended for safari areas — see a travel clinic 6-8 weeks before travel for personalised advice
  • A yellow-fever certificate is required only if you are arriving from a country with a risk of transmission, not when flying directly from the UK
  • Routine vaccinations should be up to date
  • Comprehensive travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is essential
Currency & Local Notes
  • The currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS), but US Dollars are widely used in tourism (bring crisp notes dated 2013 or later)
  • Cards in larger hotels
  • English and Swahili are widely spoken
  • Tipping guides and camp staff is customary
