Avani Victoria Falls Resort

The Avani Victoria Falls Resort is the value, family Falls base — a large, colourful resort on the banks of the Zambezi at Livingstone, sharing its grounds and, crucially, its free unlimited Victoria Falls access with the Royal Livingstone, just a five-minute walk away. Around 212 rooms include family rooms with two doubles, and a kids' club, Zuba's Adventure Camp, makes it a natural multi-generational choice. The Mukuni Boma serves a traditional barbecue with live entertainment on the Zambezi banks, a large landscaped pool sits at the heart of the resort, and the in-house desk books Devil's Pool, cruises, rafting, helicopter flights and game drives. The lively, value-minded neighbour to the Royal Livingstone.

Shumba — "lion" — is the remote open-plains lion camp, six raised tented suites on an island of fig trees in the heart of the Busanga Plains, remote northern Kafue. The lions are the headline: prides up to 20 strong, some of the best lion viewing in Africa, the famous "flying lions" leaping across receding flood waters and tree-climbing lions. The landscape is a deliberate, Serengeti-like open-plains contrast to Zambia's usual bush, with day and night drives, guided walks, hot-air ballooning over the floodplains at dawn, seasonal boating and around 500 bird species. Wilderness's premier service and 360-degree plains views complete it. The camp is seasonal, open roughly June to October, and fly-in only.

Tongabezi is the romantic Zambezi riverside lodge — around a dozen individually styled houses and cottages, each with its own dedicated valet, on a secluded, west-facing bend of the Zambezi above Victoria Falls, a property that set the standard for safari-lodge design when it opened in 1990. It is also the operator of Livingstone Island, which means breakfast, lunch or tea on the island and the famous Devil's Pool swim at the very edge of the Falls when water is low. Sunset cruises run on the world's-first electric dhow, silent and emission-free, dinner can be served on a floating sampan, and the lodge funds the Tujatane Trust School for 240-plus local children. Two pools, some private plunge pools and Mosi-oa-Tunya wildlife round it out.

Mfuwe Lodge is the iconic, accessible South Luangwa gateway — a comfortable in-park lodge of 18 thatched chalets overlooking the Mfuwe Lagoon, famous for the elephants that walk through reception on their way to a mango tree in the courtyard. That happens in mango season, roughly October to December, and it is a magnet for families. Beyond it, day and night drives explore one of Africa's best leopard valleys, walking safaris are on request, and the lodge is the comfortable base for the Bushcamp Company's six remote bushcamps — the classic walk-between-camps combo. A lagoon-view Bush Spa puts hippos below your massage, the pool looks over the water, and the lodge stays open year-round.

Time + Tide Chinzombo is a premier, stylish South Luangwa river camp — six award-winning villas of canvas, timber and leather on a private bend of the Luangwa, on Norman Carr's old base. The prime safari season — dry, with wildlife concentrated at the rivers and walking safaris at their best. October is hot but superb for game; the busiest window, so book ahead.

THE FALLS IN FLOOD

February to May

Victoria Falls is at its thundering, spray-soaked peak after the rains — most dramatic for the Falls, though some bush camps close in the wettest months.

GREEN SEASON

November to April

The emerald season brings lush landscapes, newborns and superb birding, with the best value. Some camps close; those open offer a beautiful, quiet experience.

DEVIL'S POOL

August to January

When the river is low (roughly August to January), the famous Devil's Pool at the very edge of Victoria Falls is open — an unforgettable, only-here experience.
