About the Resort
An ultra-romantic Zambezi lodge
Tongabezi Lodge

Tongabezi Lodge is the ultra-romantic Zambezi hideaway — individually styled riverside houses and cottages on a sweeping bend of the river upstream of Victoria Falls, each with its own dedicated valet. It set the standard for safari-lodge design when it opened in 1990, and it is the operator of Livingstone Island and Devil's Pool, the famous swim at the very edge of the Falls. One honest note there: Devil's Pool is seasonal, around August to January, when the Zambezi is low enough to be safe. Beyond it there are sunset cruises on the world's first electric dhow, silent and emission-free, dinner on a floating sampan, Victoria Falls excursions and Mosi-oa-Tunya game and rhino viewing, with a visit to the lodge-funded Tujatane Trust School and its 240 local students. Around 11 to 12 units range from open-to-the-river cottages to individually styled Houses, some with plunge pools, plus the Tangala Private House for families. All-inclusive and a short transfer from Livingstone Airport, it suits couples and honeymooners above all.

“I had stayed at Four Seasons, One&Only and Velaa before visiting Tongabezi Lodge. They are all magnificent. But this is different in a way that is hard to articulate.”

Royal Livingstone Hotel by Anantara
The Royal Livingstone is the premier Falls-side hotel — an Anantara on the banks of the Zambezi inside Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, freshly renovated, with one standout that no other hotel offers: direct, complimentary, unlimited walk-in access to Victoria Falls. Giraffe, zebra, baboon and impala roam the riverside grounds, the 93 rooms all look onto the Zambezi or gardens, and the days run to sunset cruises from the doorstep, Mosi-oa-Tunya game drives for rhino and buffalo, Livingstone Island and canoeing. The Anantara Spa sits in riverside gazebos and the pool looks over the river toward the Falls. The bush-and-Falls hotel — luxury with the Falls, quite literally, on tap.

Avani Victoria Falls Resort
The Avani Victoria Falls Resort is the value, family Falls base — a large, colourful resort on the banks of the Zambezi at Livingstone, sharing its grounds and, crucially, its free unlimited Victoria Falls access with the Royal Livingstone, just a five-minute walk away. Around 212 rooms include family rooms with two doubles, and a kids' club, Zuba's Adventure Camp, makes it a natural multi-generational choice. The Mukuni Boma serves a traditional barbecue with live entertainment on the Zambezi banks, a large landscaped pool sits at the heart of the resort, and the in-house desk books Devil's Pool, cruises, rafting, helicopter flights and game drives. The lively, value-minded neighbour to the Royal Livingstone.
Time + Tide Chinzombo
Zambia
Time + Tide Chinzombo
Time + Tide Chinzombo is a premier, stylish South Luangwa river camp — six award-winning villas of canvas, timber and leather on a private bend of the Luangwa, on Norman Carr's old base. The Rech and Carstens design is the look; the substance is the safari. South Luangwa is the birthplace of the walking safari, led here by armed rangers, and it is one of Africa's best valleys for leopard, with day and night drives, the Luangwa endemics — Thornicroft's giraffe, Cookson's wildebeest, Crawshay's zebra — and exceptional birding. Each villa has a private plunge pool and a river-view tub, the main lodge a fire pit suspended over the riverbank, and dinners are served under the stars. Open year-round, on a private river frontage.
