Wilderness Bisate

Wilderness Bisate is, by many accounts, Rwanda's crown-jewel gorilla lodge — six conical thatched dome villas set in the natural amphitheatre of an eroded volcano, on the lower slopes of Bisoke, adjacent to Volcanoes National Park. The design is an homage to the Rwandan Royal Palace, and the lodge is among Africa's most awarded, but its deeper story is conservation: it sits on around 42 hectares of private reforested land, and guests plant a tree at the on-site nursery as wildlife returns to the forest. Beyond gorilla trekking from one of Africa's finest bases there is golden monkey tracking, the Mount Bisoke climb, the Dian Fossey hike, and a visit to the Gorilla Guardian Village run by former poachers turned conservationists. With just six villas the lodge is intimate and books far ahead, so dates and permits should be secured early; gorilla permits are a significant separate cost. All-inclusive, reached in around three hours from Kigali or by helicopter, it suits couples and the conservation-minded, with a two-villa Reserve for families.

- All-inclusive — meals, drinks and activities.
- Gorilla permits are a significant separate cost per person, with limited daily numbers, so book well ahead; the minimum age is 15 and reasonable fitness is needed, as treks can be steep, long and muddy at altitude — but sightings are near-certain.
- Just six villas, so the lodge is intimate and books far ahead — secure dates and permits early.
- Around two and a half to three hours by road from Kigali, or by helicopter.
