andBeyond Benguerra Island

andBeyond Benguerra Island is the premier Bazaruto island lodge, and it has one rare answer to the thing that catches people out on this coast: a deep lagoon unaffected by the tides, on the protected western shore, where you can swim all day. It sits inside the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park, a protected marine reserve that is home to Africa's only dugong population, pristine coral reefs and catch-and-release game fishing, with a PADI dive centre, sunset dhow cruises and horseback riding. Around 15 rooms — ten casinhas, two cabanas and the three-bedroom Casa Familia — are stone and thatch, with four-poster beds, private decks, rim-flow or plunge pools and folding doors to the ocean, and the beach bar is a converted dhow. Dining is Portuguese and seafood, on full board, with diving charged separately. Two practical notes: reaching it means a fly-in to Vilanculos and a scenic helicopter of around 10 minutes; and the Mozambican coast is a malaria area, so antimalarial precautions are advised. It suits couples, families and divers.

- Full board.
- Fly in to Vilanculos, then a scenic helicopter of around 10 minutes to the lodge — light-aircraft luggage is soft-bag and weight-limited, and the helicopter is a separate cost.
- The Mozambican coast is a malaria area, so antimalarial precautions are advised — speak to your GP or a travel clinic before you travel.
- A barefoot-luxury island lodge for couples, with the three-bedroom Casa Familia for families; casinhas take a child to 12.
