Azura Benguerra Island

Azura Benguerra Island is the eco-luxury honeymoon retreat — Mozambique's first carbon-neutral resort, hand-built by the island community, on a beachfront nestled in dune forest with no shops on the island for total seclusion. Around 20 villas, in natural materials, each have a private pool, a beach sala and indoor and outdoor showers, and each comes with a dedicated Mozambican butler-host. Days run on diving and snorkelling on the marine reserve, dhow sailing and island-hopping, and the Bazaruto marine life — whales, dolphins and dugongs — with whale watching around July to October, seasonal. Dining is flexible and full board, from breakfast at the water's edge to candlelit beach dinners under the stars and sand-island picnics, with a private chef on supplement, and there is an African spa. Reaching it means a fly-in to Vilanculos and a scenic helicopter of around 8 to 10 minutes, and the Mozambican coast is a malaria area, so antimalarial precautions are advised. It suits couples and honeymooners above all, with family villas for families.
