Angama Mara

Angama Mara is suspended around 1,000 feet above the Mara Triangle — its name is Swahili for 'suspended in air' — on the rim of the Siria Escarpment in the western Maasai Mara. Thirty tented suites, split across two identical camps of fifteen, each front the plains with a ten-metre wall of glass, so the view is the room: the Mara Triangle spread out below, balloons drifting past at dawn, the escarpment falling away. The Mara Triangle is the reserve's quieter, well-managed western sector, rich in Big Five and more than 570 bird species, and the lodge's own kopje is the one from Out of Africa — set now for private picnics, sundowners and proposals. Days run on full board with all guided drives and escarpment walking safaris included; meals lean on the shamba, the lodge's own working garden, and there is a shared rim-flow pool with the Mara below. Owner-run and widely rated among East Africa's finest, it is reached by a light-aircraft hop from Nairobi — a romantic, iconic setting for couples and families alike.
