Crimson Resort and Spa Mactan, Cebu

Crimson Resort and Spa Mactan is Cebu's family beach base — a contemporary, Balinese-inspired resort on around six hectares with a private beach cove on the Hilutungan Channel, and the most accessible of the Philippine beach picks, about 20 to 30 minutes from Mactan-Cebu International Airport. Accommodation runs in neo-Asian style with Cebuano touches, from Deluxe Garden and Sea View rooms to 40 villas with private plunge pools — oceanfront pool villas and beachfront casitas of around 115 square metres, with butlers and in-villa breakfast. The showpiece is a three-tiered infinity pool over the Cebu Strait with private cabanas, alongside the Crimzone kids' pool. Dining is led by Enye, the Spanish and tapas restaurant from chef Chele Gonzalez, with the all-day Saffron Café and the Azure beach club. The Aum Spa is award-winning, the Crimzone Kids' Club is a real Cebu family draw, and the diving and island-hopping are excellent — the Hilutungan and Olango marine sanctuaries and nearby reefs. The beach cove is compact and Cebu City traffic is a known niggle, but for a family beach-and-diving leg near the airport it is hard to beat.
