La Mamounia

La Mamounia is Marrakech's grande-dame — a legendary garden-palace inside the medina ramparts, open since 1923 and repeatedly ranked among the world's great hotels. Its heart is eight hectares of historic gardens, with centuries-old olive trees and more than 5,000 rose bushes, open around the clock for a dawn walk among the olives. Behind the Arab-Andalusian facade — zellige, carved plaster, cedar and marble over Art Deco bones — are 209 rooms and suites, including three private riads with their own patios, pools and butlers. The dining is a draw in itself: Pierre Hermé patisserie and Jean-Georges Vongerichten under one roof, with cocktails at the storied Churchill Bar. There is a nine-room spa with a hammam, a large central pool, and a weight of heritage — Churchill called it one of the world's loveliest spots, and Hitchcock filmed here — with the Koutoubia and Jemaa el-Fnaa a short walk away. This is a grand, iconic institution, not an intimate hideaway, and that is exactly its appeal: the Marrakech palace benchmark, for couples, honeymooners and heritage lovers.
