WEST, SOUTH & HILLS
December to March
Dry and sunny on the popular southwest coast, the cultural triangle and tea country — the prime season, and the busiest. Book the best beach hotels ahead.
EAST & NORTH
May to September
When the southwest is wet, the east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay) comes into its own — the island always has a dry side.
SHOULDER
April & October
Between the monsoons — variable but often fine, with fewer visitors and better value.
TWO MONSOONS

The southwest (Yala) monsoon (May-Sep) and the northeast (Maha) monsoon (Oct-Jan) mean the weather depends on which coast you're on — so we route your trip to the side that's dry.

Entry Requirements
- UK passport holders: an ETA (Electronic Travel Authority) applied for online before travel
- Sri Lanka changed its ETA fee very recently (free for many nationalities from 25 May 2026) — we'll confirm the current position for your trip
- Passport valid 6 months
Health & Safety
- No vaccinations are legally required for entry from the UK, but some are recommended
- See a travel clinic or your GP 6-8 weeks before you travel for personalised advice
- Mosquito-bite precautions are sensible in tropical areas
