Eastern & Oriental Hotel, Penang

The Eastern & Oriental Hotel is George Town's seafront grande dame — a colonial icon of 1885, the only hotel with prime sea frontage inside the George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site, built by the Sarkies brothers behind Raffles Singapore and The Strand in Yangon. It is all-suite, across two parts: the original 1885 Heritage Wing, with its Moorish minarets, domed lobby, 14-foot ceilings, period furniture and pith-helmeted bellmen, and the 2013 Victory Annexe, with around 122 sea-view suites, Club facilities and butler service. Dining centres on 1885, the signature colonial fine-dining room with a celebrated English afternoon tea, alongside the all-day Sarkies, Farquhar's Bar and the poolside terrace. There is a seafront infinity pool and what is billed as the world's longest hotel sea-front lawn, and George Town is at the door — its street art, clan jetties, temples and mosques and legendary hawker food. There is no beach; this is a seafront heritage hotel, the Penang culture-and-food leg of a Malaysia trip, and a natural pairing with Langkawi up the coast — with the Sarkies thread tying it to Raffles Singapore.
