La Bastide de Gordes

La Bastide de Gordes is the hilltop-village Provencal Palace — an Airelles address holding France's Palace distinction, set in a sixteenth-century maison on twelfth-century ramparts, perched on the cliffside of Gordes over a Luberon valley of lavender and olive groves. Its forty rooms carry period decor and over two thousand artworks, its sixteen-hundred-square-metre spa takes inspiration from the twelfth-century Senanque Abbey, and its dining includes Clover Gordes by two-Michelin-starred Jean-Francois Piege. Vintage Citroen 2CV jaunts run through the lavender and poppy fields, a terrace pool looks out over the Luberon, and the Airelles Summer Camp keeps families happy through the season. The rooms range across a maison built into the ramparts, with village or Luberon-valley views, free-standing tubs and antique fireplaces, up to the five-bedroom Maison de Constance with a private pool. The setting is the soul of Provence: Gordes is one of France's most beautiful villages, the Senanque Abbey and its lavender rows lie close, and the perched villages of Roussillon, Menerbes and Bonnieux, the markets and the Palais des Papes at Avignon all sit within reach. Provence at its most romantic. The Luberon unfolds from the door: the lavender rows of the Senanque Abbey, the ochre cliffs of Roussillon, the perched villages and the Provencal markets, with the Palais des Papes at Avignon a little further.
