The Oberoi Amarvilas, Agra

The Oberoi Amarvilas is the Taj Mahal-view icon — the only hotel inside the Taj's protected green belt, about 600 metres from the monument, and the only one where every room and suite, along with the pool, bar and lounge, looks out at the Taj Mahal uninterrupted. A Mughal-palace design of terraced gardens, fountains, reflection pools and pavilions sets the scene across eight acres, and the 102 rooms and suites are finished in teak, marble, gold-leaf frescoes and hand-knotted rugs, with a 24-hour butler. The view is the whole point: from the bed, from the colonnaded white-marble pool torch-lit at night, from the fourth-floor Oberoi Spa. Private golf-cart transfers run you straight to the Taj entrance, skipping the heat and the queues, and the 'Oberoi Under the Stars' dinner is served to the floodlit silhouette. Esphahan brings refined Indian cooking with live music. There is no beach — this is the Agra leg of a Golden Triangle tour, usually a night or two between Delhi and Rajasthan, and an unforgettable one.
