The Oberoi Udaivilas, Udaipur

The Oberoi Udaivilas is the Udaipur lake-palace icon and, for many, the emotional high point of a North India journey — a grand palace on the banks of Lake Pichola, facing the City Palace across the water, in thirty acres of Mewar-inspired domes, courtyards and gardens. The arrival sets the tone: a private boat carries you across the lake to a rose-petal welcome. The roughly 87 rooms and suites are dressed in thekri mirror-work, marble and domes, with private terraces, many opening onto a semi-private stretch of the long connecting pool and the suites their own private pools, all with butler service. Dining is pure theatre — domed candlelit rooms at Chandni and Udaimahal, live music on the terrace, and Mewar by Vineet, the reimagined Mewar cuisine of Vineet Bhatia MBE. The Oberoi Spa sits under Mughal archways around a sunlit courtyard. There is no beach; this is the romantic Rajasthan leg, the City Palace and Jagdish Temple close, with cultural workshops from miniature painting to thekri craft.
