The Oberoi Beach Resort, Lombok

The Oberoi Beach Resort, Lombok is the low-key, authentic alternative to Bali — a traditional-style resort on Medana Bay in northwest Lombok, facing the Gili Islands across the water, with Bali's Mount Agung on the horizon at sunset. Designed by Peter Muller, the pioneer of the 1970s Balinese villa, it spreads around 50 keys — 30 terrace pavilions and 20 villas — across 24 acres of tropical gardens on a private white-sand beach, in coral rock and thatch with dark woods, local fabrics and sunken marble garden baths; the villas sit in walled courtyards with rock ponds and raised dining pavilions, some with private pools. There is a 40-metre infinity pool, a private beach with a jetty and home reef, a PADI dive centre and a tennis court. Dining runs from the award-winning Lumbung to the Sunbird Café, the Tokek Bar for sunsets over the Gilis, and Amphitheatre dinners with traditional dance. The Gili Islands are a speedboat away for diving and snorkelling among turtles. The trade-off is a longer airport transfer of around an hour and three-quarters; the reward is a quieter, more authentic Indonesia. The Lombok and Gili leg.
