W Koh Samui

W Koh Samui is the island's design statement — the first W in Thailand, strung along a peninsula on the quieter northern coast between Maenam and Bo Phut, with a beach on each side so you can take sunset on one and sunrise on the other. Seventy-four villas step down the slope, every one with its own pool, the architecture by MAPS Design Studio and the interiors by P49, all clean lines and colour against the green. At its heart is WET, the day-bed pool scene that gives a W its pulse, with the music and the energy to match; AWAY Spa runs the other way, into Asia's first Thaimazcal herbal-sauna ritual. The waters off Maenam are championship kite- and wind-surfing territory, Namu turns out the signature Japanese cooking, and Fisherman's Village and the Big Buddha are five minutes up the road. It is about twenty minutes from the airport, pet-friendly, and the social, design-led counterpoint to Samui's serene resorts — made for couples, groups of friends and anyone who wants a scene with their seclusion.
