Ice, Icebergs and the Edge of the Map

Greenland is the world's largest island and one of its last great frontiers — a vast ice sheet, fjords choked with colossal icebergs, tiny brightly painted settlements, a living Inuit culture, and the Northern Lights overhead. With its new airports transforming access, this once almost-unreachable land is opening up as never before.

At HighStreet Holidays we don't simply book Greenland — we route it: the icebergs of Disko Bay, an expedition along the wild coast, or a winter aurora and dog-sledding escape, with the flights, lodges and logistics handled.

With access to a carefully vetted portfolio, from Ilulissat boutique stays to small expedition ships, we build a Greenland journey to one of the most extraordinary places on earth.

Greenland is the edge of the map — icebergs the size of buildings, a living Inuit culture and skies full of aurora. Its new airports are finally making it reachable.

Best Time to Visit
When to Go
SUMMER
June to August
The main season — the ice-free coast opens up, the midnight sun lights long days, and conditions are best for icebergs, hiking, kayaking and expedition cruising.
AUTUMN & AURORA
September to October
Crisp days, autumn colour on the tundra and the return of dark skies — the Northern Lights begin, with fewer visitors and atmospheric light.
WINTER
November to March
Deep cold and dark, the prime season for aurora and dog-sledding around the settlements — limited but magical, with the new airports easing winter access.
SPRING
April to May
Lengthening days, snow-covered landscapes and excellent dog-sledding and ski touring, before the summer thaw — a quiet, beautiful shoulder window.

Practical Information
Practical Information
Getting There
  • No direct flights from the UK — typically via Copenhagen (around 4.5 hours to Nuuk) or via Reykjavik, Iceland
  • Nuuk's new international airport (opened 2024), with more opening through 2026, has transformed access
  • Connections from major regional UK airports
Entry Requirements
  • UK passport holders need no visa for short stays
  • Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark but is NOT in the EU or Schengen Area, so its days are separate from your Schengen allowance, and a Schengen visa is not valid for Greenland
  • If transiting Copenhagen, Denmark's Schengen rules apply on the way through
  • Passport valid 6 months recommended
Health & Safety
  • No vaccinations are legally required for entry from the UK
  • Comprehensive travel insurance with emergency medical evacuation cover is essential — and often mandatory for expedition voyages, as these are remote regions far from hospitals
  • A reasonable level of mobility helps for Zodiac landings
  • Ask your doctor about seasickness remedies for any sea crossing
Currency & Local Notes
  • The currency is the Danish Krone (DKK); cards are widely accepted in towns
  • Greenlandic and Danish are spoken, with English in tourism
  • Settlements are small and remote — we plan flights, boats and weather buffers carefully
  • Tipping is modest
