Kumarakom Lake Resort (Kerala)

Kumarakom Lake Resort is the Kerala backwaters leg — a heritage resort on the banks of Lake Vembanad, Kerala's largest backwater lake, in twenty-five acres of paddy fields, mangroves and coconut and pepper groves beside the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary. Its villas are something rare: reconstructed 'manas', 16th-century Kerala homesteads relocated and reassembled, blending traditional architecture and open-air bathrooms with modern luxury, jacuzzis and private courtyards; Prince Charles spent his 65th birthday here. A 250-metre 'meandering' pool replicates the curves of the backwaters, with villas opening directly onto it, alongside an infinity pool on the lake's edge and villa plunge pools. Ettukettu serves multi-cuisine dining in an eight-sided heritage mansion, Vembanad does seafood over the water, and Ayurmana runs authentic Kerala Ayurveda. A complimentary musical sunset cruise crosses the lake each evening, overnight houseboats drift the backwaters, and the bird sanctuary holds more than 180 species. The open-air bathrooms take a little getting used to, and it is about two hours from Cochin — the South India leg, a distinct region, often the relaxing finale to a tour.
