The Lodhi

The Lodhi is Delhi's contemporary sanctuary — a Kerry Hill design on seven acres beside the 15th-century tombs and parkland of Lodi Gardens, a calm green counterpoint to the capital's grand palaces. It is the rare city hotel where most rooms open onto a private plunge pool on an expansive balcony, and they are the largest in Delhi and the surrounding region, finished in jaali stone screens, lofty ceilings and rotating contemporary Indian art. There is a serious side to the wellness too: a heated 50-metre lap pool, an athletic club with tennis and squash courts and Pilates and yoga studios that few city hotels can match, and a spa built around a Turkish Hammam. The kitchens are a draw in their own right, led by the acclaimed Indian Accent, with Élan for all-day Indian, On the Waterfront for Italian and Yokoso for Japanese. There is no beach — this is a design-led urban retreat — and it makes the contemporary Delhi base for a North India journey, with Lodi Gardens to walk before breakfast.
