The Ritz-Carlton, Langkawi

The Ritz-Carlton, Langkawi is the newest of the island's three great resorts — opened in 2017 in a private bay on the southwest coast, in a ten-million-year-old rainforest beneath Mount Machinchang, on the Andaman Sea. It is the pool-villa-heavy and over-water-spa pick: 119 keys across 90 rooms and suites and 29 villas, the villas set in rainforest, beach and ocean-front settings, all with private pools, in longhouse-inspired design with ice-jade marble baths. The headline is the spa — the island's only over-water spa, in cocoon-shaped pods over the sea — matched by the over-water Hai Yan Chinese restaurant on stilts above the rocks. Dining runs from the two-level Langkawi Kitchen to the fish-trap-shaped Beach Grill and the oceanfront Horizon lounge, the arrival is across a Walkway of Wishes, and there are three pools, a private-cove beach and kayaking through the mangroves. Where the Datai is the nature-icon and the Four Seasons the Bensley-design-and-family resort, this is the contemporary, pool-villa-and-over-water-spa choice on Langkawi — a honeymoon and family favourite, ten kilometres from the airport.
